Making Fishing Dreams Come True

I’m excited to share with you the incredible journey we’ve been on these past few months. Last year at ICAST, the fishing trade show in Orlando, I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing Misty Wells. Misty is the host of the show “Let’s Take it Outside” as well as the founder of “A Reel Future.” Our conversation sparked an idea that, after months of planning, blossomed into a series of life-changing experiences for 15 very special kids.

Three Unforgettable Trips

We organized three separate trips, each hosting five foster children, for a total of 15 kids who got to experience the magic of the Florida Keys. These weren’t just fishing trips – they were comprehensive adventures designed to open these children’s eyes to the wonders of our marine world and the joy of the outdoors.

More Than Just Fishing

While fishing was certainly a highlight, with the kids learning from some of the best anglers in the Keys both inshore and offshore, our adventures encompassed so much more:

– Swimming with dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center, where the kids also learned about the fascinating cognitive and behavioral research conducted there.
– Exploring the local marine life up close at Aquarium Encounters.
– Enjoying a special dinner at the Square Grouper, where the kids could order anything they wanted – a first-time experience for many.

Moments That Matter

One of the most touching aspects of these trips was seeing the impact of seemingly simple experiences. Many of these children come from homes with significant food insecurity, and several mentioned that the dinner at Square Grouper was their favorite part of the trip. The ability to choose freely from a menu – something many of us take for granted – was a new and empowering experience for them.

The impact of these trips went beyond just fun and games. As one child told us, “I have never been as happy as I was being out on the water.” It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do.

Continuing Jose’s Legacy

These trips embody everything that Jose stood for – using the power of fishing and the ocean to change lives and create lasting memories. Seeing the joy on these children’s faces as they reeled in their first fish or spotted dolphins swimming alongside the boat was truly priceless.
