A Dream Come True

After three years of planning and overcoming numerous health challenges, the Whittaker family—Dan, Cindy, and Danny—finally embarked on their dream fishing trip.  This heartwarming story of resilience, hope, and the healing power of fishing is a testament to the foundation’s commitment to bringing joy to families facing difficult circumstances. 

A Journey of Courage 

The Whittakers’ story began in 2004 when Danny, at just five years old, was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of brain cancer. After successful treatment, the family faced another series of health challenges in 2021, including Danny’s stroke and additional cancer diagnoses. Through it all, Danny’s love for fishing remained a constant source of comfort and joy. 

In a twist of fate, as the family prepared for their long-awaited trip, Cindy was diagnosed with Stage 3 rectal cancer in April 2023. Despite these obstacles, the Whittakers persevered, more determined than ever to celebrate life and create lasting memories together. 

An Unforgettable Experience 

Thanks to the generosity of the Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Memorial Foundation supporters, the Whittakers enjoyed a week-long adventure in the Florida Keys. Their itinerary was packed with exciting activities that created memories to last a lifetime. The family went offshore fishing with Captain Kevin Rowley, where Danny experienced the thrill of catching his first Skip Jack tuna and several Mahi Mahi. They also enjoyed local fishing excursions with Captain Steve Hancock, allowing them to explore the diverse marine life of the area. 

One of the highlights of their trip was swimming with dolphins, an experience that brought pure joy to Danny’s face and touched the hearts of his parents. The family also embarked on an educational shark tour with Captain Clay of Key West Extreme Shark Tour Adventures, learning about these fascinating creatures of the deep. To cap off their adventures, they shared a memorable dinner with Krissy and her family at The Square Grouper, savoring not just the delicious food but also the warmth of newfound friendships.

More Than Just Fishing 

For the Whittakers, this trip was about more than just catching fish. It was an opportunity for Dan to fully enjoy fishing without the usual responsibilities of caring for his family. It allowed Danny to indulge in his lifelong passion for fishing, which has been a source of comfort throughout his medical journey.  

For Cindy, the trip held even deeper significance. As the Program Director at Basecamp Children’s Foundation, a non-profit organization serving children with cancer and their families, Cindy has dedicated her career to supporting others through their cancer journeys. This trip offered her a unique perspective – not just as a caregiver or a professional, but as someone who had recently battled cancer herself. The experience was profoundly healing, allowing her to step away from the daily challenges of her work and her own health struggles, and simply enjoy precious moments with her family. 

Moreover, this trip served as a valuable reconnaissance mission for Cindy. Experiencing firsthand the incredible impact of the Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Memorial Foundation’s program, she gained invaluable insights that she could bring back to Basecamp. This experience will enable her to confidently refer families from Basecamp to the foundation, knowing the transformative power of such trips for families facing cancer.
