Black Dagger Group Four Family: A Tribute to Resilience and Connection 

This past December, the Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Memorial Foundation collaborated with Black Dagger Military Hunt Club and Misty Wells from “Let’s Take It Outside” and “A Reel Future” to turn fishing dreams into reality. Despite challenges from a late hurricane season and unexpected changes, we managed to create unforgettable memories for veterans and their families, showcasing the healing power of the ocean, camaraderie, and the beauty of the Florida Keys. 

About the Black Dagger Military Hunt Club 

Black Dagger Military Hunt Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing outdoor experiences for veterans and active-duty military, focusing on those overcoming significant challenges such as spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and post-traumatic stress. Their mission resonates deeply with our Foundation’s goals, making this partnership a perfect fit. Specializing in adaptive activities, Black Dagger’s dedicated team brings hope and joy to countless military families. 

The Fourth Group: A Special Family Experience 

When a planned trip for a woman battling cancer had to be rescheduled, we reached out to David Winters, President of Black Dagger, who quickly connected us with Colleen and Scott, a Gold Star family. Scott, an active-duty Green Beret with 25 years of service, and his wife Colleen brought their blended family of four to the Keys for a much-needed getaway. 

Colleen’s first husband, also a Green Beret, was killed in action, leaving her to navigate the challenges of being a military widow and raising their son. Her story deeply resonated with me as someone who has experienced a similar loss. Our connection grew quickly over shared experiences of grief, resilience, and the joy of finding love and support again. 

Day One: Dolphin Research Center 

Their adventure began with a visit to the Dolphin Research Center, where the family enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime swim with dolphins. While their youngest son showed no fear, Scott—the seasoned Green Beret—hesitated at the cold water, bringing laughter and light-hearted moments to the day. The Dolphin Research Center staff’s dedication to marine education and interaction added depth to the experience, reminding us of the interconnectedness of humans and marine life. 

Day Two: On the Water with Living the Dream Charters 

Captain Ray and Leah Scarborough of Living the Dream Charters welcomed the family for a customized Keys adventure. Despite cold weather and slowed fishing, the Scarboroughs’ local expertise ensured the family made the most of their day, blending shark fishing, exploring the islands, and diving off towers into the turquoise waters. Ray and Leah’s passion for the ocean and ability to adapt to their guests’ wishes turned the day into a highlight of the trip. 

A Rainy Day Connection 

When rain canceled the second day on the water, the family spent the day at their rental home, where our kids swam, and Colleen and I had the chance to connect. We discussed Scott’s upcoming retirement and the challenges military families face. From missed birthdays to navigating the complexities of veteran healthcare, our conversation underscored the immense sacrifices made not just by service members but also by their families. 

Gratitude and Reflection 

Scott shared his gratitude: “Great time with the Foundation. They were so warm and welcoming and created memories my family will remember for life. Thanks to Krissy for opening up your slice of paradise for us to enjoy!” 

Honoring Military Families 

This trip highlighted the resilience and sacrifices of military families. Their shared stories of strength and humor reminded us of the importance of gratitude and support. We’re honored to have hosted such an incredible family and look forward to continuing our mission of creating fishing dreams, celebrating life, and building lasting connections.
